Kaufman Statement on Revelation of Iranian Nuclear Site
September 25, 2009
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Sen. Ted Kaufman (D-DE), a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released the following statement today in response to news of Iran’s Qom nuclear facility:
“Suspicions confirmed – today’s disclosure of the Qom facility is yet another indication that Iran has been carrying on a secretive nuclear program in defiance of the international community. Iran has clearly violated its obligations to ensure its nuclear program is for civilian use only, and I strongly encourage Iran to meet the growing demands of the United Nations and leaders at the G-20.”
“I am pleased that the international community worked together to reveal this covert program, and I strongly support the joint American, British, and French request that Iran allow an immediate inspection of the Qom facility. It is clear that we must exhaust all options to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, beginning with tough diplomacy. I remain deeply concerned about Iranian threats against Israel, and the growing prospect that a nuclear Iran may drive neighboring states to develop their own nuclear weapons.”
